Track #1: Coyote Sleeps

Take me back
To when I was a child
When everything was good enough
Good enough for the while

Refrain

Coyote sleeps in the moonlight
Rabbit goes by the day
Snake winds around on a hot afternoon
And Eagle flies on his way

Chorus

Take me back if you can
Take me back to the land
Where the people sleep in the moonlight
And the children play in the daylight
And that feeling never dies
Though it may go away for a while

Take me back
To when I never was alone
When everyone was standing by
Everyone I've ever known

And if you call my name out
A little boy would come
So Eagle flies now high above
So Little Boy would come

Chorus

Coyote stood on a mountaintop
He was looking all around
Ocean then surrounded him
But soon it would sink down

For the Spirit came to him
And told him to be kind
And that is how I knew this world
A world that I will find

Chorus

And the world that you shine
Makes a world just like mine
And the tears that you bring
Well they help us all to sing
And the light that you hold
It will never leave you cold
There's a mountain to climb
Beneath an ocean of time

Chorus

Refrain

Track #2: Message and The Bottle

Set out on lonely seas
I drift upon your shore
Just one more bottle that's been tossed out to sea
So pick me up and take me to your special place
Where no one notices you
And you can feel free

Chorus
Just take your time I think you'll get to where you're going
Take your time I think you're doing fine
Cuz in the end it's always worth it to be knowing
Time waits for no man you got nothing on the line

Wave after wave, they came
It got so hard, well, I admit
And I looked to the stars to guide me on at night
And every passing ship it seemed so close but far away
I gave up so many times but it always comes out right

Chorus

I've been the message and I've been the bottle
I've been tossed around just waiting here for you
Pick me up and take me to your special place
I've been holding it inside
For you to break through

Chorus

Track #3: Mojave Country

One man, an Indian, took a long walk through a desert land
And he walked on by a Western Sky on the Chumash Trail where the Tongva lie
He walked for days underneath the sun rays
In the Valley of the Smoke lay a great a big haze
But he had to go to the ocean below to trade all his goods before the winter snow

Chorus
He sang: "I don' t know if I will ever see my wife and family
I belong now to the canyons and the desert prairie
Looking East, I see the mountains past Mojave Country
I am on my way"

He stopped to rest on a mountain that he blessed
Squinting his eyes he saw the Water to the West
And he walked on down to a Chumash town
To see what goods they had for him to be found

Chorus
He said, "I have come so you can take all that you need now from me.
I'm in need of goods so I can feed my wife and family
Looking West, I see the Islands past your Chumash Country
I am on my way"

On his way back home in the Desert all alone
Everything was dry - he could feel it to the bone
And he looked to the sky with his mind's eye
Saw his whole world change
Change with no goodbye

Chorus
He sang "I don' t know if I will ever see my wife and family
I belong now to the canyons and the desert prairie
Looking East I see the mountains past Mojave Country
I am on my way"

Track #4: Running

Well, I was running
Through the trees
When the sunlight brought me to my knees
But I got up again
I got up again and I ran along

I passed an old man
He said to me, "Take the time to set yourself free"

Chorus
"Cuz I want to live again
I want to live again"
I can hear him say

Teacher taught me
About a land
Where everyone had more than they could stand
So they went to war and died
They prayed and then they cried
For an answer

So a mother
She looked at her son
She cried out to her Lord
"What have I done?"

Chorus

I hear the preacher
Tell everyone
That God gave up his only son
They took him to the wood
They did all that they could
To take him away

So everybody
They looked around
They saw every single sin that brought them down

Chorus

Track #5: You Wonder Why

Looking through the door I see
A picture there of you and me
And we’re looking on
We’re staying strong
We’ve got our whole lives, our whole lives sitting right in front of us

But I toss and turn every night
I wake up with the morning light
And I feel so cold like I’m getting old
And you ask me from a dream where I am
And all I say is “honey I don’t know”

Cuz I don’t know where I go

Chorus
You wonder why, you wonder why I cry when you’re not here
You take my hand, you understand there’s nothing left to fear
You wonder why, you wonder why I cry when I’m alone
You take my hand, you understand it’s you I’ve always known

So hang on, son, hang on

Coming home I see you there, quickly I pull up a chair
But I gotta run I got things to get done
I keep running, running, running, but I’m not going anywhere

So this morning with the sunrise
I wake up quick with open eyes
And I can’t sleep it’s like I’m sinking deep
And you ask me from a dream where I am
And all I say is “honey I don’t know”

Chorus

Cuz I don’t know where I go

Chorus

Track #6: The Ballad of Mission Santa Cruz

Five soldiers sleep with our keep up against the Mission wall
Four days have past since the last attack came at the end of fall
Indians in the hill, they're all up there still
They won't surrender, they just refuse
But they wait through the days and with arrows ablaze they'll return to Santa Cruz

At the first sign of dawn we were gone to hunt these pagans down
A rebel man we understand they call him Charquin in this town
In the cold December hail, we've spotted a trail
The Indian guides bring us the news
It's Charquin and his men, they'll attack us once again unless we find him for Santa Cruz

Chorus
Pero yo recuerdo estos dias
Con mi madre y mis tias por el mar
Y justo cada dia mi madre me decia,
“Hijo Mio tienes que andar”

We surrounded his camp in the damp moonless mountain night
A musket shot and it brought confusion, shouts and fright
But with the firelight we could see our clear victory
The devil Charquin and his men did lose
We bound them up in chains, with the pounding of the rains headed back to Santa Cruz

The rebels faced the law and they saw the wrath of Monterrey
The Governor was just, well he must send them all away
Charquin died in a cell, his life a living hell
In Santa Barbara, where he paid his dues
I spent these same days finding all the ways to protect Mission Santa Cruz

Chorus
Pero yo recuerdo ya mi casa
Suenos de la raza por el mar
Y justo cada dia mi madre me decia,
“Hijo Mio tienes que andar”

Years have gone by and now I find myself in Spain
Back in my town and all around a life far from the pain
But I dream every night of a God-awful sight
The face of Charquin that I must confuse
For he I have become
I'm a pagan on the run
A stranger in my own land in Santa Cruz

Track #7: Argentina

Flying down along this coastline
I do believe it’s been a while since I was feeling fine
Looking back out my rear view
I tell myself it’s time that I saw something new

Cuz when everyday’s the same it can sometimes bring you pain well that’s true

Chorus
So I take the time to let myself be
Take the time to set my loving free
Take the time to walk just where I may
When it rains it comes down hard and fast
I’ve been living in sadness past I’ve got so much left to say

Pushing down along the boulevard
Man I can’t believe I let life get so hard
Finding bits of me in the lost and the found
Here I am I’m stuck in this South American town

And the feeling fades away like the end of the day well that’s true, yeah it’s true

Chorus

The Argentina nights move me along
They got myself singing a new song

Track #8: Mammoth Song

Sitting in the warm water soaking my body
When a friend comes by with a drink
So I reach out my hand to him and I begin to think
“This place has put a spell on me,
So I think I’ve made up my mind
I’m staying right here ‘cuz there sure couldn’t be a
Better place I could find”

Chorus
So if you’re planning on stopping by
I’ll be sitting there reading “Catcher in the Rye”
I’m stuck right here between a mountain and the sky

Watching all the people that come and go
I sure don’t know what they do
I’m just thinking about resting my head
And grabbing some food
You know I can’t really speak for them
Because I got my own priorities
The sun keeps shining and I sleep on the grass
And that’s all that I need

Chorus
So if you’re planning on coming by
I caught me some fish
They’re beginning to fry
I’m stuck right here between a mountain and the sky, oh my

Warm water comes and warm water goes
And the sun will always come down
It’s getting near dark and pretty soon
I’m the only one around
But I believe in the world under me
And the stars will always shine
As long as I’m dancing here on this Earth
Well, I’ll be just fine

Chorus
So if you’re planning on coming by
Tell my Mama she don’t need to cry
I’m stuck right here between a mountain and the sky

Repeat

Track #9: Captain Jack and the Modoc War

California, 1873: the Modocs fought to be free
On the land their grandparents had lived and died
They took some U.S. soldiers for a ride

Captain Jack was the man who led
He’d be free or he’d end up dead
So he told his wife it was time to reclaim their home
It’s a way of life and a place to call their own

Chorus
Hey Captain Jack
You led the Modoc attack
Something made you crack to try to get your homeland back
Your people looked around at the land they lost and found
It’s a place to which they’ll always be bound
The Earth, the sky, and the lava caves underground

The army took a hit when they charged that Modoc spit
So the President ordered his General to negotiate
It looked like Jack’s men had won their fate
But weeks of talks passed
Exhausted the Modocs couldn’t last
So Jack’s men told him it was time to show
“If you shoot that man those people all will go”

Chorus
Hey Captain Jack
You led the Modoc attack
Something made you crack
To hear the voices behind your back
Your people looked around
Exhausted on the ground
But it’s a place to which they’ll always be bound
The Earth, the sky, and the lava caves underground

So soon the day did come
It was a general and a gun
And Jack drew out and he shot him to the ground
You could feel the dream die with the sound
The Army moved right in
The Modocs fled again
And the soldiers picked them up one by one
And that is how this Modoc War was done

Chorus
Hey Captain Jack
You led the Modoc attack
Something made you crack
You shot a general in the back
Your people looked around
But it was you they lost and found
Soldiers cut your hair and had your arms bound
They hanged you and they buried you in that ground

Some days on Tule Lake
When the Earth begins to bake
And the sun beats down upon that volcanic land
You can still see where the Modocs make their stand

Track #10: Island Life

Everybody’s telling me, “Oooh, I’ve got to go”
Everybody’s telling me this world has so much more
So I hit the island with a suitcase on the breeze
I thought I knew the good life but what I had was just a tease

Chorus
Get yourself to the place
Where the ocean comes right in
Clouds will form above your head
Let the rain and wind begin
Let it cleanse your body as your soul begins to grin
Island Life will pull you in, erase where you have been

Open yourself to a wave that crashes down
Get yourself off the chair make a food run into town
There’s plenty there to buy my friend
Let the locals shake your hand
Just free up your body to the blue sky and the land

Chorus

Sun goes down and dark comes in
Get those candles out and lit
Watch the Earth rotate to night
It’s like a perfect fit
Crickets start a-buzzing
And the moon begins to rise
It’s like a new life that I see
With my brand new eyes

Chorus

Track #11: Thank You Letter

["And friends today we honor a particularly beautiful soul - a shining soul"]

Tell me something I didn't know
I lost my faith long ago
I'm a child of the daylight
But the sun is sinking low

I can only push the window
Open to my very soul
When the stars are in alignment
But the wind blows in so cold

And I don't know, I just don't know

But you always made things better
I guess that was your role
So I send you my thank you letter
and I address it to your soul

I've been running every morning
Just so I can catch my breath
And I meditate on Moses
Yeah, I feel it's life or death

You can only feel the weather
When you drag yourself outside
Will the full moon bring me answers
Or does it just bring in the tide?

Well, I don't know, I just don't know

But you always made things better
Well I guess that was your role
So I send you my thank you letter
And I address it to your soul

["Dear God, merciful Father of us all, your children, bowed in grief, seek light to dispel the darkness which threatens to overwhelm us"]

I believe what I see
I believe what I see

But you always made things better
Well I guess that was your role
So I send you my thank you letter
And I address it to your soul
Yeah, I address it to your soul

["And I think that she did what she came here to do, she took care of all of us."]

Track #12: Persephone

A summer day came with a promise of rain
And I can't restrain from feeling this way
She walked away from me with a tear on her cheek
And all I can do is sit by and weep and pray

I knew it would come just a little too soon
The time that we shared slipped away with the moon
I can only wait now for a new one to come
I'll see you again under a full one someday

But I can't let my sun shine
I can't let the life grow

Chorus
Persephone, you were taking from me
And sometimes I fear that I'll never again see
Your face full of smiles and your eyes dancing free
Persephone, won't you come back to me

Now will they walk? Now will they talk?
Now will our grieving hearts outlast the clock?
It's a struggle to be but we do what we can
I know I can make it when I can't hold your hand

So take care of yourself and talk to me soon
The winter months last like you'd never see June
When the first snowfall comes I'll be watching outside
Knowing you're safe somewhere, feeling like I do

But I can't let my rain fall
I can't let the life grow

Chorus

And I feel you so close to me
As the air, the air that I breathe
And I cover the land
With love's memory

Will you find yourself for me?
Will you find yourself for me?

Chorus

Persephone, you're a rainbow to me
The colors you bring me
So vibrant and free
With your face full of smiles
And your eyes dancing free
Persephone
You mean so much to me

Track #13: Dreamer

Take my hand and don’t look back
We’ve got a long, long way to go
People are coming in our lives
And others go I know
Well, I close my eyes to see them
They are circling my soul

There’s a mountain in the desert
And I want to take you there
You climb so high in a bright blue sky
It’s like heaven’s in the air
Oh look down south see Mexico
With the cool wind in your hair

Chorus
Take me to the place
Where the hot spring water flows
Lead me to the people
That the sunrise only knows
Hold me in your arms
Cuz that’s the only place a dreamer ever goes
All highs, and no lows

Take my hand and come with me
To a place still wild and free
There’s islands off the coastline
That were made for you and me
Oh the clouds on Anacapa mean rain for sure, you’ll see

Chorus

Track #14: Coyote Wakes

Coyote stands on Diablo now
And he looks into our eyes
Leave something for the children
And the feeling never dies

Heal the Earth below your feet
From hatred and from rust
Make those who came before you proud
Before we turn to dust
Make those who came before you proud…
